Tools and materials needed for painting an interior door
- Spray paint (Maston ONE)
- Primer (Maston ONE)
- Clear coat (Maston ONE or e.g. Maston Metallic Clear Coat)
- Degreaser (Maston Degreaser)
- Spray handle (for easier application on large surfaces)
- Sandpaper (grit 180) or a sander
- Painter’s tape
- Protective paper or plastic
- Screwdriver
- Protective gear (mask, gloves, safety glasses)

Step-by-step instructions for painting an interior door:
1. Preparation
- Make sure the door surface is suitable for painting. Maston ONE spray paint adheres to most materials, including wood, MDF, laminate, plastic, and various metals.
- Choose a well-ventilated area for painting.
- Cover surrounding areas to protect them from paint overspray.
2. Remove the Door and Hardware
- Use a screwdriver or appropriate tools to remove the door and all hardware such as handles and hinges.
- Label each part to make reassembly easier.
- If desired, you can also paint handles or pulls. For better durability on high-wear parts, remember to apply a clear coat.
3. Clean and Sand the Surface
- Thoroughly clean the surface to remove grease and dirt.
- Lightly sand the surface with 180-grit sandpaper to improve paint adhesion.
- Wipe down the surface using Maston Degreaser.
4. Apply Primer
- Test the paint on a hidden area first.
- Apply 2–3 thin coats of Maston ONE primer. This ensures better adhesion and creates an even base.
- Allow the primer to dry according to the instructions on the can.
5. Paint the Door
- We recommend using Maston ONE acrylic spray paint, which dries quickly and provides excellent UV protection for a long-lasting result.
- Spray evenly in light coats.
- Let each layer dry before applying the next. Typically, 2–3 coats provide good coverage.
- For improved durability, apply two coats of clear coat after painting. Follow the instructions on the product.
(In the example video, Maston Metallic Clear Coat was used for a subtle sparkling finish.)
- A spray handle can make painting easier and can be reused with any spray can.
6. Reassemble the Door
- Once the paint is completely dry, reattach all hardware.
- Remove protective coverings and clean the workspace.
- Install the door back in place.
Tips for Best Results
- Always work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.
- Test the spray paint on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure the desired color and finish.
- Take your time with each step to achieve a high-quality result.
By following these instructions, you can refresh your home’s look without major renovations. Spray painting is a cost-effective and relatively easy way to update your interior elements.
