Steps to a successful paint job
1. Preparation
Choose a well-ventilated area for painting and protect surfaces that you do not want to paint. Remove the doors if necessary.
Clean the surface thoroughly by removing all dirt and grease. To improve paint adhesion, especially on rusty metal surfaces, lightly sand the surface (grit 180) using sandpaper or a sander.
Finish by cleaning the surface with a degreaser (e.g. Maston Degreaser) and allow it to dry completely before painting.
2. Painting
You can use either spray paint or brush-applied paint. Suitable products include heat-resistant paints, such as spray or liquid paint, or Wood Stove & BBQ spray paint.
Brush Application
Apply one or two even coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next if needed. This helps prevent runs and ensures a smooth finish.
Always check the exact drying times on the product packaging.
- Recoat time: approx. 5 minutes
- Touch dry: approx. 2 hours
- Fully dry: approx. 24 hours
Note that final curing requires heating the surface to approximately 200°C for the first time.
If necessary, paint and tools can be cleaned using Maston Xylene.
Spray Application
Shake the can thoroughly before use. Apply several thin coats using steady back-and-forth motions, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
Start spraying slightly outside the target area and finish outside it as well – this helps prevent paint buildup and runs.
Check drying times on the packaging.
- Recoat time: approx. 5 minutes
- Touch dry: approx. 30 minutes
- Handling dry: approx. 24 hours
Coverage of one spray can is approximately 1.5 m².
Heat-resistant paint fully cures when heated (approx. 200°C), which also accelerates drying.
3. Finishing
Check that all areas have been painted and that the surface is fully dry. Remove protective coverings, and reinstall the doors if they were removed.
4. Commissioning
Heat the oven, fireplace, or stove to cure the paint properly. Clean the surrounding area.
This simple process improves the appearance of the doors – and the entire oven, stove, or fireplace – while significantly extending their service life.
