Repairing plastic parts with a Fiberglass Repair Kit

With the Maston Fiberglass Repair Kit, you can repair, for example, broken motorcycle plastic parts. Repairing plastic parts requires careful preparation, and with these instructions you’ll succeed while also saving on repair costs.

How to repair broken or fractured plastic parts

Tools Needed

• Maston Fiberglass Repair Kit (product no. 706020)
• Brush
• Scissors
• Small container / cup for mixing 
• (Optional) Soldering iron and metal strips for reinforcement

Steps for a Successful Repair:

1. Preparation

• Choose a suitable place for the repair.
• Protect the surrounding areas to avoid spilling resin/hardener on your workbench, for example.
• Open the package and lay out all the contents (fiberglass mat, resin, hardener).
• Cut a suitable piece of fiberglass mat, about 2 cm larger than the damaged area.

2. Repair Process

• Mix the resin (100 parts) with 4% (4 parts) hardener thoroughly and apply it to the clean surface with a brush.
• Place the fiberglass mat in position and press it down firmly.
• Brush resin over the fiberglass mat (several layers can be applied).
• Wait about 40 minutes, then either mechanically work the laminated surface or smooth it with polyester filler.

If the plastic surface requires reinforcement, you can soften it with a soldering iron and add metal strips underneath the fiberglass.

The Laminated surface can be finished with:

• 2K Polyester Filler
• 2K Polyester Spray Filler
• 2K Epoxy Filler
• 2K Acrylic and Epoxy Fillers

Painting the Surface

1. How to do it

• Follow the painting instructions indicated by the icons on the back of the can.
• Spray several thin coats of primer on the surface. For example, use Maston One / 1K Etch Primer.
• Apply the first coat very lightly (a mist coat), e.g., with Maston CarColor spray paint.
• Allow 5 minutes drying time between coats.
• Spray several thin coats until you achieve a glossy and even surface.
• NOTE! Clear coat metallic shades with a special metallic clear coat to achieve the correct tone and gloss. Use clear coat also on solid colors to improve durability and add shine.
• Coverage of CarColor paint: approx. 1.5 m² per can.

2. Drying Time

• Check the drying time for each type of paint from the manufacturer or from the icons on the back of the can.
• CarColor drying times: Touch-dry in 30 min, fully dry in 24 h.

3. Cleaning

• We recommend Maston Acetone for cleaning up paint splatters, etc.

• Take your time at each stage to ensure a high-quality finish.
